As soon as your baby enters the teething stage, it is time to introduce them to several semi-solid and solid foods that they can chew and chomp. While offering them a wide variety of delicious foods, one must ensure to feed those dishes that are rich in all essential nutrients which your baby requires during the growth year. Upma is one of that delicious and nutritious Indian food, which is best for your baby’s health. In today’s post, the different recipes of upma are showcased for you all.   • Suji upma with carrots

This upma recipe is suitable for 1-year-old babies. It will require several ingredients such as ¾ cup of suji, ¼ teaspoon of mustard seeds, 1-2 springs of curry leaves, 1 pinch of asafetida, 1 finely chopped onion, ½ teaspoon of grated ginger, 3 tablespoons of finely chopped carrots, 1 teaspoon of lemon juice, 2 tablespoons of ghee, and 1½ cups of water. 

To prepare suji upma with carrots, take a kadhai and roast suji on low flame until it turns light brown. Now heat 2 tablespoons of ghee in separate kadhai then add mustard seeds. When they begin to splutter, add chopped onion and grated ginger and sauté for 1-2 minutes. Add carrots along with other ingredients and again sauté for 2-3 minutes. Now add water and let the mixture boil. Add roasted suji and lemon juice. Stir the mixture continuously to avoid lumps. Let it cook on low flames and stir at regular intervals. Once cooked, serve warm to your baby.

  • Vegetable upma recipe for babies

This upma recipe for babies requires ingredients such as ¾ cup of suji, ¼ tablespoons of mustard seeds, 1 pinch of asafetida and turmeric powder, ½ tablespoons of jeera powder, 3-4 tablespoons of cooked and mashed vegetables, 2 tablespoons of ghee, and 2 cups of water.

To prepare vegetable upma, take a kadhai and roast suji on low flame until it turns light brown. Now add 1 tablespoon of ghee and continue roasting it. Add 2 cups of water and let it boil. Now lower the flame and let it simmer. Take a separate pan and heat ghee and jeera powder in it. Stir it well then add turmeric powder, asafetida, and mashed vegetables in it. Now add the cooked suji in it and mix well. As 2 cups of water are used, the upma will have a runny texture which is apt for babies. My 8 months old baby was comfortable with vegetable upma, so I introduced it to her menu.





  • Quinoa vegetable upma

The ingredient needed to prepare this upma recipe for babies will include ½ cup of organic quinoa, 1 finely chopped onion and carrot, 2 tablespoons of cooked and mashed green peas, ¼ teaspoon of cumin seeds and mustard seeds, 1 tablespoon of ghee, 1 tablespoon of urad dal, and 1 tablespoon of cooked and mashed sweet corn. 

To prepare it, take ½ cup of quinoa, and urad dal and rinse, drain, and soak them properly for 15 minutes. Then heat ghee in a pan and add mustard seeds into it. Once it splutters, add cumin seeds. When the seeds crackle, add curry leaves into it and sauté for few seconds. Then add black grams and let it sauté. After that add onions and fry well. Next add other ingredients such as carrots, green peas, sweet corn and fry them for 1-2 minutes. Now add 1 ½ cup of water, and let it boil. Now add soaked quinoa and let it cook for 15 minutes.

  • Kodo millet upma

To prepare this upma recipe for babies, collect ingredients such as 1 cup of roasted Kodo millet, 1 medium-sized chopped onion, and tomato, 1 cup of chopped capsicum/carrot/peas, 1-2 finely chopped green chilies, curry leaves, mustard seeds, and groundnut oil.

Take a pan and heat some oil in it, then add mustard seeds and curry leaves in it and sauté it well. Now add onion, tomato, and sauté it well. Add 2.5 cups of water and I cup of roasted Kodo millet. Allow it to cook for 15-minute on low flame. I introduced this recipe to my daughter at the age of 8 months and to my surprise, she finished the whole bowl.

  • Sweet corn and peas upma

This upma recipe for babies will require ingredients such as a few kernels of sweet corn and green peas, 1 teaspoon of ghee, ¼ teaspoon of mustard seeds, 1 ½ roasted suji, and white urad dal, ½ finely chopped onion, and ½ cup of hot water 

To begin with it, first, steam and cook the sweet corn and peas to make it soft and mash them properly. Now take a pan and heat a teaspoon of ghee in it, then add mustard seeds and urad dal. Once it begins to crack, add finely chopped onion in it and fry it well. Now add the cooked and mashed peas, sweetcorn and stir it well. Now add hot water and stir continuously while adding roasted suji. Close the lid and let it cook till Rava is cooked well. This upma recipe is suitable for 1-year-old babies.

  • Idli upma

Idli upma recipe will require ingredients including 4 idlis, ½ tablespoon of mustard seeds and urad dal, few curry leaves, 1 finely chopped onion, and 1 tablespoon of oil. 

To prepare it, cut the 4 idlis into small pieces and crumble them using your fingers. Now take a kadhai and heat some oil in it, add mustard seeds, and urad dal in it wait till it crackle. Add finely chopped onion and sauté it well. When the onion becomes translucent, add crumbled idlis and mix it well. Serve it to your baby with tomato ketchup or chutney.

  • Oats upma recipe

This is one of the healthiest and tasty foods for your baby. Ingredients needed for oats upma include ½ teaspoon of oil, 1 cup of oats, 1 tablespoon of mustard seeds, cumin seeds and urad dal, 8-10 cashew, ¼ cup of finely chopped onion, carrots, cooked and mashed, peas and French beans, ½ tablespoon of ginger, and 2.25 cup of water. 

To prepare it, heat oil in a pan and add 1 cup of oats. Stir on low flame for 3-4 minutes until brown in color. Transfer it onto a plate then again add 1.5 tablespoons of oil in the same pan and heat. Now add mustard seeds and stir till it crackle. Add cumin seeds, urad dal, and cashew and let it get brown. Now add onion and other veggies to it and sauté it well. Now add water and let it cook for 8-9 minutes. Now add the roasted oats and stir well.

  • Broken wheat upma

When Jayalekshmy posted her Broken wheat porridge for babies and kids, I was tempted too. I wanted to make something with broken wheat/daliya/cracked wheat which was stocked up in my provision cupboard. I planned to make an upma with it. Added loads of veggies and churned out a broken wheat upma with mixed vegetables.

It will require ingredients such as 1 cup of broken wheat, cooked and mashed carrots, beetroot, potato, capsicum, cauliflower, beans and green peas, 1 finely chopped onions, 1.5 tablespoons of ginger garlic paste, a pinch of turmeric powder, 1 tablespoon of oil, mustard seeds, and ghee and 1 cup of water. 

To prepare broken wheat upma for 8 to 12 months of babies, heat oil in a pan, and sauté mustard seeds and ginger garlic paste. Then add onion and fry till translucent. Now add other veggies and turmeric powder and stir well. Now add dry roasted broken wheat and mix well for 2-3 minutes. Add water and pressure cook for 3-5 whistles. Add ghee and feed your baby. If your baby is older like 20 months old Anshika no need for grinding as they are able to bite and chew the cracked wheat. The addition of vegetables makes broken wheat upma a wholesome nutritious meal.

  • Carrot and broken wheat upma

This recipe is suitable for 10 months old babies. It will require ingredients such as 1 cup of broken wheat, 1 cup of grated carrot, a pinch of grated ginger, and turmeric, ½ spoon of cumin seeds, 2 tablespoons of coconut, and 3 tablespoons of oil. 

Take a pan and heat oil in it then add cumin seeds. Once it begins to crack, add ginger and carrot and fry it well. Now add water, when it starts boiling add broken wheat. Let it cook then add coconut and little oil on top of it. Serve warm to your baby.

  4. Yes indeed, Lapsi is a wholesome nutritious meal for babies and specially when we add loads of veggies, it goes to the next level. Lapsi halwa is also yummy and can be given for a change – just that instead of sugar, jaggery or misri powder is used as a sweetening agent since they are healthier than sugar.
