This post gives you the 14 yummy and delicious chapati recipes for toddlers and kids.

Wheat is probably the most commonly available cereal and also occupies the highest demand owing to its abundant health benefits. It is one of the most wholesome food items too. Research has proven that wheat is extremely beneficial for a healthy living. However, if you want to get its cream benefit, choose products made from whole – wheat flour rather than the refined varieties.

14 Variety chapati recipes for toddlers and kids you can try today:

Being from the south, I am an absolute rice person but I love making chapatis especially phulkas. Initially Jianna loved rice but with age we all know how kids shift their tastes and now she is a chapati girl. But I have to keep her taste buds active so here are a few varieties which I indulge in.

Lets see the 14 yummy and healthy chapati recipes for toddlers and kids you can try making today.

1. Phulkas:

We shall start with our good old phulkas. Thin, soft phulkas melt in your mouth when you add ghee. Kids love it. Phulkas can be teamed with anything you like – be it a simple vegetable sabzi, any non-veg curry, jaggery, jam, sauce or chutney.

My daughter Jianna doesn’t need anything when she is eating phulkas, it just needs to be warm. Phulkas can be torn in small pieces and can be given with milk to toddlers above 1 year old.

In the picture, I have added a pinch of turmeric while setting the dough since it helps in strengthening the immune system.

2. Thepla (Fenugreek chapati):

I am Keralite by birth but being in Gujarat for more than 20 years has turned me into a Gujju by heart. Theplas are one of the specialties of Gujarat and full of nutrition.

The dough is prepared with wheat flour, besan, oil, whole jeera, til (sesame seeds), curd, methi (fenugreek) leaves, grated doodhi (bottle gourd), a pinch of turmeric powder, chilli powder and salt.

Roll out like chapatis and team it up with curd or mango chunda (pickle).

3. Aaloo paratha:

I remember my kiddo days when my mother used to give aaloo paratha and tomato ketchup in my school tiffin box. It used to be all my friends’ favorite.

The filling is very easy to prepare. You just need to boil and mash potatoes. Add finely chopped onions, salt, crushed green chillies, pinch of hing (asafoetida), jeera (cumin seeds) powder, turmeric powder  to the mash.

See the filling you prepare is not watery. Make a dumpling out of the dough with the filling and roll out your parathas.

If you are not so successful with aaloo parathas, make a chapatti, spread a little ketchup, put in the potato filling, roll and enjoy.

I am sure your kids will love it.

 4. Matar Gobi paratha:

Here comes my favorite paratha variant. Boil green peas well, mash and keep it aside. Cut and crumble cauliflower and mix the two veggies, adding crushed green chillies, garam masala, crushed ginger and salt.

Make wheat dumplings with the vegetable stuffing, roll out parathas, cook in ghee / oil and serve warm.

5. Onion paratha:

Add finely chopped onions, pinch of red chili powder , turmeric powder,a pinch ajwain powder, a pinch of garam masala and salt to the wheat dough.

Roll out your pyaaz parathas and roast it in ghee/oil.

6. Dal dhokli:

A traditional healthy Gujarati favorite and quick to make.

For the dough:  Mix whole wheat flour, besan, asafoetida, ajwain and oil. Measurement for the dough should be; for 1 cup wheat flour, 1 ½ table spoon besan.

Knead all the ingredients to make a dough using water. Roll out thin chapatis, cut them in diamond shapes and one by one put them in your freshly prepared dal (you can also add veggies like flat beans / bottle guard etc which is purely optional).

Let it boil for 5 to 8 minutes. Garnish with coriander and let your toddler relish it.

7. Khakras:

There is absolutely no need to get those ready made oily khakras when you can simply make it at home with the left-over chapatis.

Infact you don’t even require a khakra maker for it. Just roast chapati for a longer time on the tava until it gets the papad texture, spread a little ghee, sprinkle chaat masala and enjoy.

Toddlers can be given by crushing and adding in their milk. This makes a yummy crunchy breakfast too.

8. Vaghareli Rotli / Stir fried roti:

Vaghareli or stir fried roti is a very interesting recipe, a typical Gujarati as well as Maharashtrian snack dish which literary means stir-fried roti.

Use the left – over chapatis. Tear them in small pieces. Heat oil in a deep frying-pan, add cumin seeds, curry leaves, chopped onions, pinch of turmeric powder, chilli powder and sauté for 5 minutes. Finally add the chapati pieces, a little lemon juice and cook for 2-3 minutes.

Vaghareli rotli is ready to be served. My mother loves it with her evening ‘Masala Chai’.

 9. Egg Roll:

Make a simple Egg burji by adding veggies like finely chopped onions, tomatoes, cabbage and a little ginger. Spread a little tomato ketchup over the chapati, fill in the egg burji, roll and eat.

It is almost like eating a wholesome nutritious egg. You can also make paneer roll by replacing egg with paneer in this recipe.

In the picture I have made a healthy egg frankie.

 10. Missi Roti:

We Indians are the biggest dal fans. I myself keep a stock of a variety of dals. Many a times I make dal using either fenugreek leaves or spinach. The addition of these greens makes it yummier and raises its nutritional level too.

There are days when we have dal leftover for the next day. What we can do with this leftover dal is to add it in our chapati dough and roll out yummy chapattis.

My little Jianna happily eats missi roti watching her favorite cartoons. You can also add vegetable stock in the dough and make chapattis.

 11.  Lachha Paratha:

Laccha paratha is a soft as well as crispy multi – layered paratha.

I bind wheat flour dough with salt, oil and water and make it in triangular shapes with four layers. It is similar to our usual parathas.

Spread a little ghee and oil as you roll out chapatti. Fold 4 times into a triangular shape and again roll out like a chapatti. Cook in ghee and serve with anything you like.

12. Multi-grain Chapati:

Multi-grain flours are readily available in the market as well as at the chakki (flour mill). You can mix in flours of bajra, cornmeal, ragi etc to make multigrain flour at home too. It is rich in protein, fiber, iron, vitamins, thiamin, niacin, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc etc. This is an all-in one super food for our children and of course for us too.

Chapattis made out of multi-grain flour tastes a little different from our regular wheat-flour chapattis. They are quick to make and good to eat.

13. Sookha masala Puri:

Sookha masala puri is my neighbor’s recipe which is a super hit among kids here.

To make the dough, bind the wheat flour with malai (milk cream), oil, jeera (cumin) seeds, ajwain seeds, salt, turmeric powder and very little water. The dough should be hard unlike the usual chapatti dough.

Roll out little puris and deep fry it in the oil. This can be stored in air-tight containers for minimum 2 months.

My Jianna loves this and eats in her snack times.

14. Mooli (Radish) paratha:

Grate Mooli (radish), remove excess water by squeezing it out, add a pinch of chilli powder and salt. Make a dumpling out of the wheat dough with the filling and roll out your parathas.

Let your child enjoy with dhaniya chutney, ketchup or curd.
