Broken Wheat Porridge for Babies and Kids

Editor’s Note : Today’s recipe is broken wheat porridge for babies and kids. Do you like broken wheat ? Personally I don’t like it in the form of upma , but when it is transformed into a yummy nurukku gothambu/ broken wheat payasam, I don’t mind gulping a glass or two :P.

Broken wheat also known as bulgar wheat / daliya /cracked wheat is ideal for weight loss post baby as it is low in calories. But for babies we can make it a wholesome meal by adding whole fat milk , nuts and ghee. Even diabetic and heart patients can have broken wheat as part of their diet. For babies and adults broken wheat helps to reduce gas troubles and constipation.

Today’s post is by Jayalekshmy who is a mom of 1 year old Rithvik . She loves to play with her bub and found out her passion for cooking post her baby 🙂

Over to you Jaya 🙂

BROKEN WHEAT PORRIDGE FOR BABIES AND KIDS

This is one of my one year old baby’s favorite dish. I used to give him this as mid evening snack on alternate days or thrice weekly. Broken wheat porridge is very tasty and nutritious for babies. Suitable for eight months and older kids .

  2. Hii I have one doubt since some telling we should give only the milk of broken wheat to babies after soaking it throughout night.but can v give the whole wheat after pressure cooking it?

    • Hi Aswathy,

Soaking whole wheat overnight is very good .It make the wheat soft thus helping in extracting more milk without pressure cooking. If you are pressure cooking it, 2 hours soaking time is more than enough.

      Hope it clears your doubt.

      Regards
      Jayalekshmy

  3. Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!

I was a bit skeptical at first whether my baby will like it. But she loved it! Ate the whole bowl 🙂
Skipped the ghee and nuts. What else can we add into this? 😀

  9. Dear Bindhya,

This is the way i prepare jaggery syrup.Use jaggery made from Palm wine (what is called karippatti ) for babies and not the other one made from sugarcane.I just used to melt in little amount of water just to immerse it in low or medium flame until karipatti dissolves completely.Allow the liquid to cool.Strain it to remove the impurities.Store it in a glass jar in refrigerator.

(Note:don’t add more water as it makes the syrup very watery )
