Today I bring to you the travel friendly porridge recipes for babies – in both sweet and savory flavors. They are

  • Whole-wheat flour porridge or sukhdi –  savory and sweet
  • Lotus seeds porridge – savory

We all love traveling, but the biggest issue with travelling with small babies is ‘food’.

When my kids were small, I used to carry a small rice cooker to cook baby food (sometimes I still do :))

Many a times, we cannot use the rice cooker / cannot cook during travel in train, planes, buses or cars. My daughter never liked cerelac and it used to be a real challenge as you don’t want to give biscuits or fruits all the time.

Travel friendly no cook porridge recipes for babies:

For both the recipes, we will prepare the base powder and add milk or water.

#1. WHOLE WHEAT PORRIDGE or SUKHDI POWDER RECIPE

Whole wheat porridge

This is a very healthy recipe. The key ingredients are whole wheat powder and ghee which are beneficial for babies.

Ghee and whole wheat contain some of the healthiest fats required for babies and kids. Consumption of whole wheat also aids in maintaining a good metabolic rate.

Ingredients for the base powder:

  • Whole wheat flour or atta – ½ cup
  • Ghee or clarified butter – 4 tablespoon
  • Almond powder – 1 tablespoon (optional)

How to prepare the base powder for the porridge?

Heat a thick bottomed pan and add ghee to it. Once the ghee is heated a little, add in the atta or wholewheat flour.

Roast on a low flame for 6 to 8 minutes. Do keep stirring to ensure even roasting and avoid burning. Once the raw smell is gone and atta turns light brown in shade, add in the almond powder and roast for 1 minute more and let it cool.

The base powder is ready. Once the powder cools off, we can add the ingredients for salty and sweet versions

For the savory porridge

  • Salt – to taste
  • Jeera or cumin powder – 1 teaspoon
  • Ajwain or carrom seeds powder – 1/2 teaspoon

To prepare the jeera and ajwain powder, roast the jeera and ajwain together on medium heat in a thick bottomed pan for 2 to 4 minutes . Let it cool and then grind and sieve. Powder is ready.

This powder will ensure that the baby do not have any gastric problem.

For the savory / salty version, add in the salt and spice powder (jeera and ajwain) to the base powder. Mix water or milk as required.

For the sweet porridge

  • Sugar (preferably unrefined / organic ) powdered– 1.5 tablespoon
  • Cardamom or elaichi powder – 1 pinch  (optional)

In case, your baby likes sweet, you can add more sugar. To make the sweet porrigde, add in the cardamom powder and sugar to the base powder. Mix well .

Take the required amount of warm water or milk to the sukhdi powder so that no lumps are formed. Sweet porridge and mashed banana or apple make a very good combo.

#2. LOTUS SEEDS PORRIDGE, MAKHANA PORRIDGE OR MAKHANA KHEER

Lotus seeds or makhana are versatile, tasty and very healthy. They have a fab amount of protein, magnesium and provide a decent number of calories per gram. I often roast them and serve as snack for my kids.

How to prepare the base powder for the porridge?

  • Makhana/ Lotus seeds – 1 cup
  • Ghee/ Clarified butter – 2 tablespoon
  • Salt / sugar – as per taste.

Heat a thick bottomed pan and add in the makhana/ lotus seeds. Keep stirring continuously to avoid burning . Do the roasting on a medium flame only. Roast them for 6 to 7 minutes .

After 6-7 minutes, add in the ghee and roast again for 2 minutes. We want a light golden shade on the makhanas. Once done, transfer in to a clean plate and allow them to cool.

Once the makhanas cool, grind them into a powder and store it in an airtight container. You can also sieve the mixture, in case there are lumps. Our makhana base powder is ready.

Salt or sugar can be added to the powder. One can also add turmeric powder (along with the ghee) for added benefits.

To prepare the porridge, take the required amount of makhana powder and add in warm milk or water. Mix well to avoid lumps and serve .

  4. Very good recipes.. From which month can we give these ?? Also is sugar n salt advised before 1 year ?? I have been told a no for both n honey jaggery also not to be given .

    • Hello Juhi,

Whole wheat /aata porridge can be given once you have started solids for the baby (after 6 months).Makhana porridge can be given once the baby is 8 months old.do follow the three day rule.

Regarding sugar and salt , it is upto you.most of the parents refrain from giving sugar /salt.honey definitely should not be given till the baby is an year old.

I used to add a small pinch of organic sugar or salt and spices to make the porridge tasty.one can also use fruits to make the porridge slightly sweet.

      Thanks

  5. Hello Nisha,

Yes you can add jaggery and skip the almond powder.
You can also add a pinch of salt (if you want). Do use a good quality jaggery.

Hope your little one likes the recipe .

    Thanks

  6. The recipe looks good. Want to try that out for my 10 month old baby. I have not yet started giving him nuts. So can I jus skip almond powder in the wheat porridge ? Instead of sugar can i add jaggery?

    • 🙂 Thanks Vandana.

You can serve roasted makhanas to Vihaan (in case you have not tried them before) . They are a good alternative to popcorn and fried items.
