Whole wheat home made biscuits

I often bake for my little ones and give them these cookies as a tea time snack.

I also carry these cookies as munchies whenever we go out say for shopping or a long drive. You can also read the 20 healthy on the go snacking options for toddlers.

When I baked these biscuits/cookies  for the first time, my in-laws felt very nostalgic.

They told me that their parent used to take atta, ghee, sugar and milk to a local baker and get back biscuits tasting similar to these atta cookies.

The cookie/ biscuit recipe shared today also has ‘flax seeds‘ which we all know are very nutritious.

Flax seeds are very difficult to eat as it is. I have added them in powdered form as well as decoration.

My one year old daughter just loved the flax seeds on the top. My son loved dunking the cookies in a hot cup of milk 🙂

These home made cookies can be served to toddlers over one year of age.

So let just dunk ourselves into this simple recipe.

This recipe needs very less preparation time of 10 minutes and cooking time (including baking) of about 20 minutes. Hence lets see how we can make home made whole wheat flour cookies within 30 minutes flat!

How to store these whole wheat (atta) home made biscuits or cookies?

Store them in an airtight container. They store up well for two weeks.

Trust me you will bake your next batch before that 🙂

You can also try to make these biscuits in different shapes or sizes.

To do that just roll out the dough evenly (It should neither be too thin nor too thick). Using a biscuit cutter or cookie cutter or bottle lid, cut it into desired shapes & bake.

Hope you enjoyed the recipe of whole wheat home made biscuits for toddlers and kids.

You can try other versions of these cookies too.

  1. Hi,

The recipe is very helpful.. U have mentioned details which is v helpful for new moms like me… My 9.5 month old baby is fond of biscuits.. Now that i know I’d prefer giving her homemade biscuits instead.

I had. Doubt… The dough that i made had not turned out very smooth. It’s kinda rough or crumbled… I refrigerated it though and now its Become hard but the dough has come together… Should i immediately bake them while they r that cold? Also after pre heating it on 170 degrees for 10 mins.. Baking is also to be done on the same temperature for 15mins right?

    Pl advice.
    All the best

  2. Thanks for this wonderful recipe. I just tried it and made the first batch of crunchy cookies for my 17 month old. Made couple of modifications which might be useful to others. Added peanut powder and orange rind for added flavouring as I don’t have flax seeds. Added a little extra wheat flour than mentioned here as the dough was too soft initially.

  3. Yummyyyy!!! Melts in d mouth… I love baking… And always wntd to try making wheat biscuits for my 4 1/2 year old son Ethan… Oh, he just enjoyed it… Now I have to bake some more… Thanku Neha.. Can this biscuit be given to my 8th month baby too…

    • Hello Raynah

I am so glad that Ethan enjoyed the cookies.

Thanks for reverting back with the feedback . This is so motivating.

Yes , you can give the biscuit to your younger one too . Would definitely suggest you to use a mixie to make a powder / keep an eye on the baby while he eats these biscuits to prevent any accidents.

      Happy Parenting & Happy Baking

    • Hello Pavithra,

Apologies for the delayed response .

Yes , you can use coconut oil too. ( will suggest using virgin coconut oil ) . Regarding your query on honey instead of sugar , I would suggest jaggery / sugar only . Honey should not be heated as per ayurvedic books.

      Thanks & happy cooking

  4. Hi,

This was my first attempt at baking cookies for my toddler. They came out very tasty even though I had misjudged the baking time due to which they were a bit burnt at the edges and bottom. My kid and husband enjoyed them 🙂 inspite of them being a bit burnt.
Thanks a lot for this recipe. I don’t now feel the need to use maida in cookies, after tasting his whole wheat cookie

    • Hey Neha,
Am so happy after reading your comments. Thanks.
The cooking time varies depending on the otg and the thickness of cookies. Do try them again and am sure they will turn out well…yes , totally agree that Maida can be easily avoided if you are baking cookies/biscuits at home.

  5. Thanks Shibani .
Yes, the biscuits can be baked in the microwave as well .
It may take 2-4 minutes depending on the size of the cookie in the normal micro mode. Please check the cookie after 1.5 minute . The color of the cookie may not change.

Do try it Shibani and kindly revert with your feedback .

  6. This looks very healthy and easy to make too, thanks for the recipe Neha 🙂 Can baking powder be substituted with any other healthy option, as for babies it might be unsuitable

    • Hi Hemapriya ,

I have tried using eno and curd as raising agents . (though eno also has baking powder soda and some acids in it ).

I will try baking the same without any raising agents and will share the recipe/results with you .

  7. Nice.. will try some over the weekend.. what is the local name for flax seed?
Also can these seeds be replaced with something else?

    • Thanks Saumya,

Flax seeds are known as Alsi /अलसी in hindi .

In case flaxseed are not available , you can remove the flaxseed powder and try the recipe

For decoration purpose , you can use almond / nuts / raisins / Sesame seeds..

Let me know how it turned out for you.
