From Flab to Fab – My Journey of Weight Loss Post C Section

3 months post baby – taken during my baby’s baptism
At New Year Party weighing 57.7 Kgs !

Mothers who have had a C-section to deliver their babies, generally, have more difficulty losing weight and getting back in shape. A C-section is a major operation that involves cutting through abdominal muscles, blood loss and a much longer recovery period. Not only do the abdominals need to recover from being stretched out, the incision and stitches also require time to heal. This is my experience of weight loss post C section.

I had a C-section and very honestly I didn’t work too much on my weight loss, it slowly started shedding off with time. A positive approach which includes two things – PATIENCE & THE FEEL GOOD FACTOR – the key to all doors. Weighty issues should never be a depression catalyst.

It took me 9 months to reach 72kgs, will it not take time for the reversal process???

And yes, the weight number cannot declare that you are heavy or light, since there are people who look thin but due to their heavy muscles and dense bones, it adds to the kgs and vice-versa. Infact, the ones having dense bones have low chances of falling prey to Osteoporosis or broken bones later in life! Congrats!

I was never in a hurry to lose weight and had a good post-pregnancy diet. I have never even followed a strict Diet or exercise regimen because I am not at all a disciplinarian. Currently my baby is 13 months old and I weigh 57.7 kgs. I make it a point to eat everything but in moderation, which satisfies my cravings and also doesn’t add to my calories.

Weight Loss Post C Section – My Diet Regime

Here is my routine:

  • 6:00 AM – Green tea soon after brushing my teeth
  • 7:00 AM – Breakfast which comprises of 1 chappati with any vegetable or pulses / Corn flakes / Eggs / Idli
  • 8:30 AM – Tea at school (with minimal sugar)
  • 10:00 –10:30 AM – Roasted Mamra (Puffed rice) / Poha (Pressed rice) / Any fruit / Peanuts / Marie or  Digest Biscuits / Khakhra / Mathiya
  • 1:00 PM – Lunch (Whatever served in our School Canteen)
  • 4:00 PM – After returning home, a glass of milk
  • 5:00 PM – Roasted Mamra (Puffed rice) / Roasted Poha (Pressed rice) / Any fruit / Peanuts / Marie or  Digest Biscuits / Khakhra / Mathiya
  • 7:30 PM – Dinner which generally comprises of either 3 chappatis + any vegetable or pulses or non-veg / Rice + any vegetable or pulses or non-veg.
  • Before bedtime – A spoonful of dashmoolarishta with warm water for smooth digestion and easy bowel movement

Since I am still breastfeeding my baby – I make it a point to eat healthy food, minimal sugar and less intake of junk food. Of course, I have my indulgences once a week  😉

So girls, this was my story of weight loss post C section and I would love to know your journey too…..

  1. Hello, I am a mom of 8 month baby. Regarding my weight loose story I was really happy for my weight shedding initially after 3 month of c section. That was purely naturally but afterwards it is stuck and i didn’t loose any single kilo even. I am really worried about my tummy and weight gain. As i am working mom and my baby keeps me on toe at home so no time for exercise. What should I do???Please suggest me for fruitful result.

  2. Hi Anjana loved reading your weight loss story but I guess breast feeding helped you a lot to reduce, but in my case I couldnt breast feed my baby after fifth month also I had a c section after which my gynaec asked me to tie the binder only after three months! Now that my baby is 7 months I tie de binder occasionally (only during outtings) coz while at home doing the household routine I aint comfy wid it! Plus I have terrible back pain which stops me from exercising. Apart from diet what else can I do to get in shape! I still have a huge belly and look like a humpty dumpty mother!

    • Hey Lisha,
Relax and stop worrying. There is no need to hurry-up. Wait until your baby is a year old so that your body recovers, we are all different so losing weight varies from case to case. Take care of your backache first and join yoga sessions but please go to good yoga gurus and be consistent in your practice. Rest a good control on diet and clean eating will help you with your weight loss. Tummy binders are very good though I never used it since like you I found it extremely uncomfortable. With discipline in lifestyle, you will slowly lose weight.

  3. hi Anjana, feeling hopeful after reading you journey.
Its been 8 months since my baby was born and I have been active all through and after pregnancy as well.
I have a full time job and baby to keep me on my toes all day and leaves me no time for any exercise .I reduced some initially but now my weight is stuck and especially belly which looks like 5 months pregnant 🙁 🙁
    Donnow what to do .

    • Hello Alka,
Tummy tucking exercises and tummy binders work well. Have a glass of warm lemon juice with honey the first thing in the morning followed by a fruit platter. Cut down on artificial sugar and junk food. With time, you will lose weight and after your little one starts running around, then there is no looking back you will naturally keep working out the whole day long. 🙂

    • Arishtam is available in almost all the provision stores and medical stores. I think the cost is around Rs.80/-, you get a decent size bottle which lasts for a month easily.

    • Vinu .. Anjana is down with cold , so am replying on her behalf. Dashamoolarishtam is available in all Ayurvedic stores. Kottakal arya vaidya sala is preferred among the ayurvedic stores.

    • Hii Dear…
It’s highly commendable to see how with sheer hardwork and discipline you have maintained your old self post pregnancy. Since I know you since childhood, I know the strong woman you are and your zeal to achieve what you want is jus marvelous.
Keep up your good work dear.

  4. Very encouraging journey Anjana. Would like to know if you followed any particular exercise regime, for the tummy tuck in particular.

    • Hello Hazel,
I didn’t follow any tummy tuck exercise particularly. It was only taking care of the baby, being active in household work and avoid fat rich products / food.

    • Taking care of Jianna itself is an exercise, she is my sit-ups, dumbells, treadmill, etc. I did take care of my diet and used to avoid the fat rich food and was active in my household work too.

    • Hi Ammu Di,
Of course it can be your story tooo…. Why not???
I am sure it will work wonderss in your case toooo and then keep me posted about it.. 😉 😉

  5. Hi Anjana, Very nice!!!!!! it is a good example of reducing weight without doing dieting and exercise. How much time it took to you to come back in original shape?

    • Hi Suvarna,
Its said that almost 70% of our weight can be managed with our diet so why not watch what we eat, if we are too lazy to exercise or hit the gym. It took me around 5 months to get back in shape and I am still working on it. Household work and taking care of the baby comes an exercise, so no need to dedicate a specific time for the same 🙂 🙂

  6. Good going!! You seem to have a healthy routine, although 1 chapathi for breakfast would never do for me!!! It’s a great idea to start the day with green tea too!

  7. Hi Anjana,
Even i am breastfeeding my 12 months old baby.:)
But is green tea safe while breast feeding?I heard its unsafe in pregnancy and breast feeding.
I would like to read a post on the same.
    Cheers.

    • Hi DMom,
Green Tea contains Caffeine which is not good for us, as a matter of fact, Caffeine in excess quantity is not good for anybody but a cup won’t harm at all. Moderation is the solution, addiction is harmful.

    • Hi DMom,

As Anjana said green tea could be avoided if you feel like , since her baby is over 12 months she has started it as part of her diet regime. If your baby is under 6 months of age or so , its safe to be away from green tea as it is found to be bad during breastfeeding 🙂
