Who doesn’t like potato? Everyone loves this yummy vegetable.

Potato is one of the most popular and versatile veggies in the world. It gets mixed with all other vegetables and can be cooked in many ways like baking, frying, roasting or even can be used to make soups.

It is also a kiddie favorite. You can be sure that they would love it, no matter what form it is given to them in mashed, curry, chips, French fries etc.

Introducing potatoes to babies:

You may introduce potatoes to your babies as early as 7 months. A few parents consider introducing this simple veggie to the babies at anytime between 7-10 months. Potatoes are easy to digest and provide energy to your baby.

Although potatoes are very high in starch, there are many other health benefits of potatoes that most of us are unaware of. Most of us just consider potatoes as a food item that is rich in carbs.

  • Potatoes contain a compound called alpha lipolic acid which converts glucose to energy in our body. Studies also say that this compound aids in maintaining blood glucose level.
  • Potato skin contains quercetin, a flavonoid, which has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties which heals inflammation and repair the body cells in case of damage to the cells. Despite these qualities potato skin should be avoided until baby turns three. Even after that you should ensure that the potato skins are cleaned well.
  • Potatoes contain considerable amount of vitamin A, C, niacin and folate.
  • It also contains minerals like calcium, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, iron which are required for overall growth of the baby.
  • As they provide high amounts of carbohydrates, it is ideal for weight gain in babies.
  • Vitamins and minerals present in potatoes are good for healthy skin.
  • Vitamin C helps to prevent disease condition called scurvy which occurs due to vitamin C deficiency.
  • It is good for the babies suffering from diarrhea as it is easy to digest and provides energy. However excess intake of potatoes may lead to diarrhea due to ingesting excess starch.
  • Calcium in potatoes maintains good bone health.

Step by step aloo paratha recipe for babies and kids:

Aloo parathas are stuffed parathas prepared a filling made of potatoes.

Combine wheat flour, salt and water to form a dough. Keep it aside.

Heat oil in a pan. Add ginger garlic paste, green peas, green chillies and onions. Sautee till the raw smell goes off.

Add mashed potatoes, salt, sugar and coriander powder to the mixture and mix well.

Turn off the heat and add lemon juice. The potato filling is ready.

Roll a thick chapati and place a spoonful of filling in the centre.

Seal the chapati with hands forming a ball.

Roll out the paratha carefully.

Fry on tawa. Flip on to the other side once brown spots are formed on this side.

  • For potato filling
  • Boiled potatoes- 3
  • Chopped onions- 1
  • Green peas- ½ cup
  • Ginger garlic paste- 1 tea spoon
  • Chopped green chilies- 2
  • Salt- as per taste
  • Sugar- as per taste
  • Coriander powder- 1 teaspoon
  • Lemon juice- 1 teaspoon
  • Wheat flour- to roll the parathas
  • For the parathas
  • Wheat flour- 1 cup
  • Water- required amount to knead the dough
  • Salt as per taste
Instructions
  1. Knead the dough using the ingredients mentioned under parathas in the consistency required to make chapatis.
  2. For the potato filling, heat oil in a pan and add ginger garlic paste, green peas, green chilies and onions.
  3. Fry for few minutes or till onions turn translucent.
  4. Add the mashed potatoes and add salt, sugar, coriander powder. Mix the ingredients properly.
  5. Turn off the flame and add lemon juice. Potato filling is ready.
  6. Roll a thick chapati using dough.
  7. Place a spoonful of filling over the chapati and seal the chapati with hands making a ball.
  8. Roll out the paratha (you can use wheat flour to dust and prevent it from sticking) and fry them.
  9. Soft, tasty and mouthwatering aloo parathas are ready. Serve with curd or tomato ketchup.

Variations

You may also use boiled and mashed green peas in filling mixture.

Tip

Roll the parathas gently and without giving much pressure to them to prevent the filling to come out.

If you are preparing this for babies below ten months, directly add salt, sugar, ginger garlic paste, coriander powder, lemon juice to the mashed potatoes. No cooking required for making the filling.

NOTES:

  • You may avoid onions and green peas or use them in mashed form for babies below 10 months.
  • Please avoid green chilies for babies below 1 year
