Singhare ke Atte ka Halwa Recipe for Toddlers and Kids – Navratri Special

Today I bring to you a tasty Navtatri special – water chestnut flour halwa or singhare ke atte ka halwa recipe for toddlers and kids. This is a healthy dish for adults as well.

Navratri one of the most celebrated hindu festival is here. Many of us observe fast during this period. Water chestnut flour or singhade ka atta is one of the commonly used ingredient in fasting recipes.

Today I share a simple yet flavorful and healthy water chestnut flour halwa recipe for toddlers and kids. It is also known as singhare ke atte ka halwa or singhare ka halwa.

Even if you do not observe fast, you can use water chestnut flour for the amazing health benefits it offers.

This water chestnut flour halwa can be served to kids above 1 year. Serving such alternate flours to young kids can get them taste something different and as parents we will be relieved as we know it is healthy too.

For this recipe, we will roast the water chestnut flour in a good amount of ghee and then add sugar, water and nuts to make the delicious halwa. As the dish is very filling in nature, don’t worry if your little one delays the next planned meal after having this halwa. You can serve ½  – ¾ cup of the halwa to a kid around 1 to 2 years.

Water chestnut flour has many nutritional benefits.

  • Used in Ayurveda to cure many diseases

Water chestnut flour halwa or Singhare ke atta ka halwa recipe: 

Heat ghee in a heavy bottomed kadai and roast the water chest nut flour without forming lumps on a low heat till it attains a brown color (approximately 8 minutes).

Add the nuts powdered of your choice and stir well.

Add water and sugar to the flour and stir continuously. Add cardamom powder and let the mixture cook for another 3 minutes.

 

Once the mixture gets a halwa like consistency, you can switch off the gas. Garnish with nuts or powdered nuts.

Ingredients
  • Water chestnut flour or singhade ka atta – 1 cup
  • Ghee or clarified butter – ⅓ cup
  • Sugar – ½ Cup
  • Water – 1 Cup
  • Cardamom Powder / elaichi – 1 pinch (I have used one elaichi for the same)
  • Nut Mix – 3 to 4 tsp (cashewnuts and almonds coarsely powdered)
Instructions
  1. In a heavy bottomed pan or kadai, heat the ghee on a medium flame until it melts and is slightly hot
  2. Add in the flour and roast on low heat until the flour turn light brown color. This will take approximately 7 to 8 minutes. Do keep stirring the mix continuously to avoid forming the lumps.
  3. Add Nut mix and cook for a few seconds.
  4. Now it is the time to add the water and sugar to the flour. Stir well
  5. Add in the cardamom powder. Cook the halwa for approximately 2 to 3 minutes.
  6. Halwa is ready. Add a generous sprinkling of nut mix and serve

Notes:
  • Do keep all the ingredients handy and ready as they need to be added quickly
  • You can adjust the consistency of the halwa as per personal choice by adding more ghee and water.
  • Please do not reduce or skip the ghee as it gives the whole recipe a unique flavor.
  • Remember to use hot water or milk as it prevents the formation of lumps in halwa.

Singhade ka atte ka halwa or water chestnut flour halwa can be kept at room temperature for 2 days and refrigerated for 5 days in an air tight container.

Variations:

  1. Raisins can be added along with the nuts
  2. You can also add mashed banana (ripe ones) to enhance the nutrition value.
  3. You can also replace water with milk while cooking the halwa. This version also tastes very nice.
  4. You can also add milk to the cooked halwa for a yummy porridge.

    Neha this side too, Working mother to a 9 months old daughter. Could u please suggest whether i can give this to her, as she is below 1 year. Also her weight isnt improving, can u please suggest some recepies to be cooked at home?
