Kottakkal Nilibhringadi Keratailam – Review

86

I have experimented with my hair like anything. My hair has suffered almost everything coloring, perming , straightening to name a few. But post treatment care was negligible in my case. In short I was the last person to take care of my hair.

When I went to Kerala for my delivery, Amma caught me. My hair was oiled to the extend that you could fry 1 or 2 vadas in that oil 😛 Now also that she is here with me, I am not spared. “Oil your hair, condition it properly, take care of your hair  once when Anshika is asleep na?“ Amma is after me all the time. Coming back to the subject ; the post is about the review of one of the main ingredients in the pre and post natal hair care as per Ayurveda – its about Kottakkal Nilibhringadi keratailam.

Neelibhringadi keratailam was introduced by sister-in-law and we took over it. During my pregnancy, Amma used to massage a handful (yes literally) of oil into my scalp as it is supposed to cool the body. We use Nilibhringadi keratailam from Kottakal aryavaidya sala. Just to mention not only in pregnancy phase , anyone can use this oil for their hair.

    • Hi. I just bought the kayyanyadi keratailam from Arya vaidya sala. One ingredient from it has caught my attention. The lead sulphide in it, i.e. Anjana. I would like to know whether it is good for hair.

  3. Mam u suggested NEELIBRINGADI KERA tailam can be applied daily and wash it daily with a mild shampoo….but is that not enough to just wash away with warm water ??? Or if u suggest shampoo….which would be better….?

  7. HAI SANGEETHA
I’m facing severe hair fall from last 3 months.I have hair fall problem and I have very thin hair…now iam started using nilabringadi …along with this can i use kuntala kanthi tailam…will it work?

    • Navya,

To stop heavy hair fall you should have a good balanced diet, sleep and low stress level lifestyle. You might also want to check your blood and take medications if there are any deficiencies. I am not sure about the kuntala kanthi tailam as I haven’t used it, hence cant comment.

  8. Useful post! I’m using bringadi by kama ayurveda. It works awesome as a natural conditioner. I guess this one also must be similar to bringadi…

  9. Hi Sangeetha, I am 29 yrs Male. I have hair fall problem and I have very thin hair which is causing my hair to fall lyk anything. Due to very thin and very less dense hair, it gives me a bald look. Also I can see the end of hair is very curvy. I have consulted my homeo doctor and he suggested me Nilibringhadi Thailam/oil. I will use this on a daily basis as you mentioned. I am using Loreal fall repair 3 shampoo. Is it a mild and god shampoo to use on daily basis? Shall I continue it? Also is it advisable for me to use conditioner of the same brand or not advisable. Kindly advise me. Thank you very much.

  10. Hi sangeeta,

Detailed review..recently I read articles on kottakal neelibringadi and how it contains anjanam..aka antimony..its poisonous and can cause liver damage, kidney damage, headaches, vomiting, and other array of health disorders…scary..what is tour take on this?? Will you continue using this?? I am currently using another brand.

      • Hi sangeetha….anjanam is antimony sulphide..it is a heavy metal and like lead can lead to harmful side effects. I often consult kottakal doctors and have used lakshadi oil for my second born and loved the coconut smell…will ask doc about this next time I visit the clinic..big fan of their oils and totally trust the kashayams which are now in pill forms too..

  11. Hello Sangeeta

I’m facing severe hair fall these days, what shampoo i should use? I was using loreal 6oil nourish and recently i switched to Avon antihairfall solution. After using avon shampoo my hairfall has been increased. Also my hair is chemically treated 9months ago. Kindly suggest me solution to fix my problem.

    • Shobi,

Try using the products as recommended by the parlor lady during the rebonding session. Regular spas and protein treatment would be required to maintain the chemically treated hair.

  12. Poonam giri on

It seems grt sangeetha bt from.where to get this oil and dear i even asked you abt raw banana powder availablity

  13. Is K P Namboodiris Chemparathy thaali good for daily use to wash away neeli oil…i sweat a lot and i need to find a shampoo which need to be used daily without much chemical sideeffects

  14. hi sangeetha,

i had been using this oil from the past 5 months. but the thing is i still face hairfall. Is it bcoz of amount of oil we apply? i usually apply a bit more oil and leave for 2 days and then wash. Is this the reason for my hairfall?

    • Narmi,

Leaving oil for 2 days results in too much accumulation of dirt and grime resulting in dandruff and hairfall obviously. Overnight oiling or oiling for 10-15 minutes is more than enough.

  15. hi sangeetha,
i think amt of oil to be applied is a crucial factor, earlier i used to apply large qty of oil which increased my hair fall, but on seeing this my friend suggested to reduce the qty, since then i used to take very small qty( just enough to massage my scalp), now my hair fall is almost nil and it also increased the strength and promoted growth of new hair strands…i have been using this for past 7 months….

  16. Hi Sangeetha ths is sheethal I hv started using neelibrandi oil I hv a doubt whether I can use shampoo to wash my hair after applying tht oil if yes than can u suggest me which shampoo to use as I get weezing probs by using shikakai……plz reply fast I am waiting

  17. Iam 20 years old.my hair is very thin and weak.hairfall is very heavy for me for the past three years and i dont have lush at all..
So will neelibringadhi helps to get back the fallen hair and gives lush hair??
    Pls reply…

    • Basith,

Have you checked your blood levels? Can you share your diet routine too?

Hair loss can be due to nutritional deficiency, heredity, stress, and many other factors. It just can’t be cured with the addition of this oil. You have to take care of all the things mentioned as before.

This oil can bring in results too after continous usage. But pls take care of the other things too.. Hope you understand.

  18. I also bought Kottakkal Nilibhringadi oil..I hope it works well..it has been eight months since my delivery..I am loosing my hair very badly from last month.

    • Betcy,

Hair fall post baby is common, thanks to our hormones 😛

You can have your blood levels checked to know the nutritional deficiency and other supplements to be taken as prescribed by a doctor.

  21. Hai…sangeetha
After using thiz oil my hair fall problm increased alot…i am using this oil since 3 months…but no result…before that i dont have any hairfall problem..for better growth i started using this oil, after using this oil hair fall is like anything what to do sangeetha…still i am using diz oil because i trust ur words and diz oil…

    • Hi Prasanthi ,

Dont worry at all . You have to keep on using this oil ..Ayurvedic oil increases your hairfall first and then starts working. Meanwhile you have to take care of your diet and stress levels also to keep a tab on your hair fall.

      • I also experienced the same problem Prashanti is facing. I was about to stop this oil…but how long hairfall will continue?

          • Suvarna Sahare on

I have not yet stopped!!! As you replied to prashanti it is unique character of ayurvedic oil. Like to continue and see. I was asking you till what month hair fall will be there generally seen?

          • Yes Ayurvedic oil works like that only.. As I cant tell you the exact month of stopping of hair fall I asked whether you wished to stop…Generally it stops after 4-5 months.

  22. hi sangeetha…i hv got neelibringadi kera thailam from kottakal…i saw few reviews on neelibringa coconut oil..whats the difference between these 2…

    • Hi Roshni,

My hair is straightened , So I prefer using the loreal professional ultime series to maintain it and I use Khadi Shikakai shampoo , conditioner and Tvam brands too. If your hair is not chemically treated , Please stick to thaali (herbal hair washes ) as much as possible.

      • Suvarna Sahare on

Whether Helena/mehindi can be applied to hair? Which brand is good. Whether other products of khadi good?

        • Hi Suvarna,

Yes henna/ mehendi can be applied to your hair. But the things is that it dries up your hair pretty fast, so enough moisturisation and oil massage is required 🙂 I have used nupur .. Yes products of Khadi are good Suvarna

    hai sangeetha
please explain to me about the use of nilibringhadhi.should i use it in the night itself or can i use it in the day time.i have hair fall problem.please help me by a solution.

    • Hi Aswathy,

If you dont have cold or any problems with it then you can use nilibrringadi oil overnight as the oil provides extreme coolness to your baby. You could wash it off the next day morning.

You can use it during the day time too if you are ok to withstand the cold.

  24. neelibringhadi oil can be used for kids.how it should be used is when they have their first hair cut we can start oiling them with this oil.but should not stop even when you see hair is falling.as far as i know how this oil works is at first all the weak hairs will fall away and then strong hair will grow next.my uncle worked in kottakkal aryavaidya sala..he used to tell my mom to use the oil for me.. mom have oiled me this when i was a kid and continued till three four years.as sangeetha have said i have problem with cold i had to stop.but no worries i got strong hair within those years..if i have lost hair it is only because of my negligence and change of water as i studied in hostel..

  25. Hi Sangeetha,
I am speaking on behalf of an ad agency from Mumbai, We were looking for good bloggers to write for a very reputed brand which is into household products. Kindly let me know if you would be interested to write for us.

    Regards,
    Priyesh.

  26. Ohhh I never knew that switching oils also leads to hairfall…..Is it really true???? But what if its for good…??? After delivery I had terrific hairfall, now it has comparatively lessened but the problem has not come to an end yaar…!!! My mother is a great fan of Mahabhringaraj, which I only had suggested her and now I want to change my oil after reading your reviews…. Ironicalllll…….Phew!!!!

  27. hey sangeeta ,

I have been using this oil for past 12 years , and i know u ve seen my hair . trust me people it helps . but the best method to apply is apply at night and wash it off in the morning , so no tension of dirt .

  28. Hello Sangeetha,
2-3 months back I have read somewhere that castor oil is good for hair problems. So from that time I am using as such castor oil. My problem of hair fall, dandruff reduced. But apply directly castor oil is very difficult as it is very viscous. Like to try what u have reviewed. But now you do not have any problem for hair? wheather it is useful for greying problem…

    • I know about castor oil Suvarna ..dont you feel yuck when applying it , ofcourse its abundant in goodness, see you have felt the difference clearly too.

My experience : My hair growth is good , thick and moisturised, I don’t think it has helped me with greying.

  29. Hi Sangee,
The only experiment I have done with my hair was getting it rebonded a week before my engagement. Honestly, my hair wasn’t damaged due to this treatment, thanks to the regular oiling before hair wash. I am a crazzyyy fan of silky straight hair but now that I am back to my original “straight from the top and wavy-cum-curly towards the end”, I like to go for fully straight hair during occasions. I use Mahabhringaraj oil for my hair, honestly my hair fall is the same. There is no much difference. When I was expecting, I hardly experienced hairfall but now its the opposite. We have a Kottakkal outlet in my city too, will check out if I can get hold of this oil you’ve suggested.

    • Yes Anjana ..its a very good oil , but I suggest you not to switch oils as it could cause heavy hairfall. As far as my hair is considered now I have maggy kinda hair as my rebonding is wearing off too..
