Have you been looking to treat your Ganesha with home made modak? Today I bring to you the fried modak recipe.

Ganesh Chaturthi is around the corner and all of us gear up to light up our homes with the throne of our heartthrob Lord.

Now a days there are plenty of sweet modaks available in markets mawa modak, chocolate modak, dates and nuts modak etc.

Presenting you another version of  home made modak, ‘fried modak’. This is my mother’s recipe which has always been a favorite one every year. I never miss the privilege to make ganesh chaturthi recipes for Ganesha.

I love steamed modak but fried modak is a different delicacy which is deep fried and you should definitely try this.

Usually for fried modak for the outer covering  maida (all purpose flour ), sooji/rawa is used. Here, I have used wheat flour, which is healthy for kids and adults too.

Step by step fried modak recipe:

Preparation time: 10 to 15 min, Cooking time: 5 minutes, Yields: 10 to 11 modaks.

Ingredients:

  • Wheat flour – 1 cup
  • Coconut – 1/2 cup
  • Jaggery – 1/2 cup
  • Water – 3/4 cup (to knead the dough)
  • Oil for frying
  • Salt – as needed

Step 1: Making the dough

Sieve the wheat flour (atta) in a bowl, add in salt and water and knead it into smooth dough. Once the dough is kneaded cover the dough, let it rest for 10 to 15 min.

Step 2: Lets make the filling for the fried modaks

Take a pan, keep the flame low, add in coconut, jaggery, cardamom powder (elaichi powder) and mix well.

The jaggery will start to melt, let the water dry up. Switch off the flame and let it cool down.

Step 3: Let’s make the outer covering of the modak:

Take a small size dough. With a rolling pin start rolling gently it should be thick in the center and thin round.

If you want you can dust some dry flour while rolling.

Take the rolled dough in your pan add in the filling in the center.

Start pinching the edges one by one this requires some practice the more modak you  make the more easier it will be so do not panic while pinching the edges.

Bring all the edges together and  fold it in the center. Make all modaks the same way and keep it aside.

Heat oil in a deep fry or shallow fry the modaks. Drain modaks in the tissue paper.

Modaks are all ready to serve.

Note:

  • Milk can be used to knead the dough
  • You can use desiccated coconut for the filling
  • Nutmeg powder, sesame seeds can also be added to the filling.
  • Make sure you seal the modaks well
  • Always take a small or lemon size balls to roll the dough
  • Sooji or rava can be added to the flour to make it more crisper from outside
  • These modaks can be stored in a air tight container or zip lock bag.

Yummy fried modaks are ready to serve.
